Industrial Containment: 3 Engineered Solutions for Painting and Coating Flexibility

What happens when you combine engineered industrial filtration with a customized retractable enclosure? You get a flexible, industrial containment solution for isolating and protecting painting and coating processes. This is why Duroair™ engineers portable paint booths, spray booths, and other clean-air solutions that are compliant, tested, and verified to meet indoor air quality requirements — without sacrificing MRO flexibility.

Containment flexibility offers several bottom-line benefits for painting and coating, such as:

  • Reduces downtime: Portable paint booths are much faster to install than permanent clean room installations. Depending upon the size, most of Duroair’s portable paint booths are able to be constructed within several days to a week.
  • Updates older facilities: For older buildings, a portable booth can help you update your building to meet OSHA, EPA, and NESHAP standards, without the time and money required for a major facility renovation.
  • Increases growth potential: Portable, retractable paint booths can be stored when not in use, which provides more capacity and floor space to take on more projects in the same facility. This flexibility also helps prevent workflow bottlenecks.

In this blog, we will look at three different Duroair technologies that work together to isolate and contain painting and coating, to safeguard both your people and your unique MRO processes.

1: Softwall Retractable Enclosures for Industrial Containment

DuroRoom™ is the retractable softwall enclosure designed for on-the-move painting and coating during changing workflows (such as assemblies). It retracts to 20% of its extended length to accommodate overhead cranes and to save space when not in use.

Each softwall enclosure is designed with a code-compliant, galvanized heavy-wall tube steel frame. The covering is constructed with heat-welded vinyl and PVC scrim, which makes it flame retardant to meet NFPA 701 requirements. It is ideal for multiple types of indoor environments, including resistance to mildew and rot, and it is ultraviolet resistant.

Each DuroRoom is customizable to accommodate your:

  • Building’s height, width, and length
  • Temperature and humidity requirements
  • Specifications for lighting, such as foot-candles or lumens
  • Code compliance, per your industry standards

Duroair has also created the DuroDeployable™ portable paint booth for rapid Plug and Play for military maintenance operations in garrison or while deployed. It can be easily moved from garrison in 1-40’ High Cube MILVAN or 2-20’ High Cube MILVANS — anywhere a controlled environment is required.

DuroDeployable was developed by combining the DuroRoom softwall enclosure and the DuroPure™ air filtration system for safe and compliant spray operations. It effectively mitigates exposure to hexavalent chromium, isocyanates, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs)

This rapid-deploy, industrial containment solution increases operational readiness and meets the Department of Defense’s (DoD) maintenance requirements. It only takes three to four service members to get DuroDeployable operational within one hour, for true mission-readiness.

2: Non-Vented Industrial Air Filtration for Painting and Coating

DuroPure™ is a patented, recirculating, non-vented, indoor air filtration system that captures airborne particulates such as hexavalent chromium, heavy metals, VOCs, and isocyanates released during painting and coating. Because it recirculates clean air back into the workspace, no expensive ducting or venting is required to install it in any building or facility.

With built-in casters and no ducting required, DuroPure moves easily with your workflows, such as painting and coating in high-mix/low-volume (HMLV) manufacturing environments. It also minimizes overspray and improves drying times with Taper Draft Airflow Technology that moves air through the DuroRoom or DuroDeployable enclosure in a cross-draft design.

DuroPure meets and even exceeds CFM requirements for airflow. It is engineered per airflow requirements from 13,500 CFM to 200,000 CFM and beyond, to achieve airflow over 100 FPM at the intake filter face. It also ensures airflow remains below the code requirements of 25% of the LEL (lower explosion limit).

Here is a snapshot of how DuroPure’s six stages of filtration collects and destroys 99+% of airborne contaminants.

  • The first three filters capture particulates, while the next three filters treat the remaining air. The first-stage filter captures particulate to 10 microns in size, and the second-stage filter captures particulate to 5 microns in size. The third-stage filter will vary for specific applications and requirements.
  • The next three filters combine to remove VOCs. After the air passes through the first three stages of particulate capture, it moves into the second phase — a three-stage gas filtration process that employs a combination of carbon and UV filters.
  • The UV light uses a process called photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) to break apart molecules into water and carbon dioxide, thereby removing harmful VOCs from the air. Two layers of activated charcoal absorb odors and gaseous pollutants.

Additional DuroPure features include:

  • VOC monitor: The VOC C-21, a solid-state gas monitor, is capable of sensing a variety of gases and vapors (C-21 is for solvent vapors), and the system can shut down a spray gun if the VOC monitor is triggered.
  • Fire suppression: Designed by Kidde Badger for protection of exhaust systems and the enclosure. Meets NFPA 17 standards and is UL listed.
  • Defense Centers for Public Health – Aberdeen (DCPH-A) tested and verified by Army Engineers and Industrial Hygienists: The DuroPure system mitigates exposure to hexavalent chromium, isocyanates, and VOCs, meeting HQDA’s mandate.

3: Vented Industrial Air Filtration for Production Painting

DuroCap™ is the vented, modular, air filtration system that is easily customizable for extracting particulates, fumes, and gasses. It pairs with DuroRoom to create a clean-air envelope around oversized work pieces, such as aircraft and aerospace engine turbines and other massive components.

Like the DuroPure system, DuroCap is extremely effective at capturing toxins. Its two-stage filtration removes 99.4% of all air pollutants for a contaminant-free portable workstation during coating and painting.

It also includes Taper Draft Airflow Technology, which directs air down the center of the enclosure to maximize control of overspray, keep the sidewalls clean, and speed drying time. And it meets and exceeds CFM requirements: 13,500 CFM to 120,000 CFM and beyond.

But unlike DuroPure, DuroCap is specifically designed for production involving paints over 2.8 pounds/VOCs per gallon, thanks to its vented exhaust system.

Features and benefits include:

  • Easy assembly: Comes fully assembled with a pre-wired control panel (lockable fused disconnect and C/UL/US Listed). Combined with a DuroRoom, the system can be installed in two to three days with a small crew.
  • Variable frequency drive: Includes an energy-efficient VFD with adjustable air speeds. It also doubles as a soft starter to eliminate the need for a motor starter.
  • Breakthrough exhaust system: Creates a negative pressure vacuum seal around the DuroRoom enclosure to ensure no contaminants or VOCs are released into the main work environment and are directed through the exhaust system’s filters to the exterior.

A Winning Industrial Containment Solution for Painting and Coating

When you combine retractable enclosures like DuroRoom with engineered filtration such as DuroPure and DuroCap, you get a winning formula for compliant, controlled environments for painting and coating processes.

Duroair can customize a portable paint booth to work with your specific MRO processes, with features such as:

  • Filtration capable of capturing hexavalent chromium, superior to NESHAP 319.
  • Interlocked, fan-spray systems that prevent users from spraying contaminants unless the fan is running.
  • An air quality monitor and a magnehelic gauge that indicate when filters require changing.
